Unfortunately there is no recognized treatment for Mitochondrial diseases at this time. There is no magical cure, although there are many things that can be done to hopefully improve the quality of life for affected persons.

Once properly diagnosed, many individuals are prescribed what is informally known as "the mito cocktail". It consists of nutritional supplements and vitamins, and is given daily in addition to making sure that a quality diet is maintained.

Mito Cocktail

  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Carnitor
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B1, B2
  • Biotin
  • Vitamin E

If you think this might benefit you or someone you know, make sure you discuss it with a qualified physician and follow their recommended dosages.

Therapy

Many individuals affected with Mitochondrial diseases participate in therapy sessions. Often they receive physical, occupational, and speech therapies depending on their needs.

Participating in these therapy sessions helps them to gain control over their motor functions, and helps maintain their state of alertness.

Since each person is affected differently, each therapy must be approached in a somewhat unique manner with obtainable goals defined early on and appropriate actions taken regularly to achieve those goals.

Therapy sessions should be conducted by qualified therapists, and a qualified physician should be consulted on what types of activities are permissible and possibly beneficial.
